More than 200 law enforcement agencies across North Carolina are participating in the annual Torch Relay supporting Special Olympics programs throughout the state.
The relay began Friday morning in Jacksonville, where Jacksonville Police Department officers started the run at 8:30 a.m.
Officers ran more than seven miles along Highway 24 before passing the torch to deputies with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies then continued the relay for more than 10 additional miles, including stretches through heavy rain.
The annual event helps raise awareness and support for Special Olympics North Carolina while promoting inclusion for athletes across the state.
“This is just what makes me happy, just knowing that we support them as much as they support us,” Sgt. Robert Winners with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said. “We try to go 10-fold more just because we support those guys way more just so they know that we’re there for them.”
Winners, who has participated in the Torch Run for several years, also received the Guardian of the Flame Award this year.
