TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee woman who lost her loved one in a boat accident two years ago is urging boaters to be safe this Memorial Day weekend.
Ansley White said her life changed two years ago when her best friend and cousin, Makenna Greene, was killed when two boats collided on Lake Iamonia.
Now, White is sharing Makenna’s story in hopes it can help save even one life this boating season.

She encourages boaters and passengers to stay alert and educate themselves on waterway rules and safety because she says things can change in an instant out on the water.
“It especially hits home and makes you realize a little bit like how important it is to stay aware of your surroundings and follow the laws that are in place,” she said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says 75 people died in boating-related incidents in 2024.
That same report found 68% of those deaths involved a boat operator who hadn’t taken a boater education course.
They also remind boaters to wear a life jacket and never boat under the influence.
