Florida v Texas Tech in Gainesville Super Regional: Final score, recap

Rothrock comes out to close things in the bottom of the seventh with her pitch count at 96, and starts by surrendering a hard grounder to the third baseman who is unable to field it cleanly, allowing Burns to reach first on an error. Brianna Hinson pinch runs for her and Desiree Spearman comes in to pinch-hit for Pannell; Spearman strikes out swinging at a 66 mph riseball.

Cahalan opens up the seventh by bunting the first pitch for a single. McLellan lays a bunt down, but because she was inside of the baseline, she is called out on a throw that is dropped by the first baseman; that also brings Cahalan back from third. Tough call for the Gators.

No worries, two pitches later with Wesolowski at the plate Cahalan steals second again on the throw back to the pitcher. The runner advances to third on a flyout to right and comes home on an RBI infield hit by Comia, and Florida crosses the double-digit mark on the scoreboard.

Shumaker works the count full, putting runners on first and second for Erickson with two outs. Both coaches come out to chat with their teams before Lincoln induced a fly ball into the left-center gap that the center fielder hustles over to make the third out.

Quiroga comes back in to pinch-hit for Halleman and leads off the bottom of the sixth by popping out to the shortstop. Toney follows her by working a full count before grounding to the first baseman, who throws it to the second baseman at the bag for out No. 2.

Rothrock starts with a 3-0 count against Williams, ultimately issuing a five-pitch walk to keep the inning alive. However, Lis lines a 68 mph riseball at the third baseman for the third out.

The top of the sixth opens up with a groundout to the shortstop by Brown, immediately followed on the next pitch by a groundout to second by Townsen. Grover grounds out to short to wrap up a nine-pitch inning for Texas Tech.

Erickson moves to first base, McLellan shifts to center and Wesolowski takes over at catcher before the bottom of the fifth begins, while Rothrock remains in the circle. Pannell starts things off by flying out in shallow left field to the shortstop; Terry grounds the first pitch she sees back up the middle past the diving second baseman for a one-out single.

Davis goes down swinging at a 61 mph changeup that is perfectly executed for out No. 2. Allred pops the ball up in foul territory just right of the plate, but the Gators lose the ball in the sun, and instead of an out, it is just a foul ball. Fortunately, she hits a routine grounder to second on the next pitch to end the frame.

Erickson leads off the top of the fifth against Lincoln by working a full count before hitting a groundball single through the right side on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. Brown follows her by working another full count before striking out looking at the eighth pitch — a high 58 mph changeup that gets the top of the zone.

Thomas earns herself an infield hit with a bunt in front of the plate on the first pitch, beating out the throw from the third baseman by a hair. Grover hits a check-swing bunt right back to the pitcher and is thrown out at first for the second out, but the runners do advance.

Cahalan brings them both home on a line drive to right field on a low 59 mph changeup and the Gators are now up by five; she then steals second on the throw back to the pitcher — great heads-up play.

Florida capitalizes on a pop-up behind first base off the bat of Walker that the right fielder and second baseman miscommunicated on.

Wesolowski crushes a line drive into the left-center gap for an RBI double, scoring Walker all the way from first and we’re now on the verge of run-rule territory. Two balls later against Comia, Texas Tech’s coach comes out to talk with his players in the circle; she draws a four-pitch walk, bringing the top of the order back up.

With runners at first and second and two outs, Shumaker dribbles a grounder that the third baseman fields near the circle, resulting in an infield hit while loading the bases. That brings up Erickson, who pops out to the shortstop, falling short of that eight-run lead for the mercy rule.

(M5: Florida 9, Texas Tech 2)

Rothrock returns to the circle for the fourth frame of the game and surrenders a soft line-drive single by Davis to center field on the first pitch — a 60 mph changeup with screwball action on it. Allred works a full count before hitting a hard grounder past the first baseman for a double down the right field line, putting runners at second and third with no outs.

Quiroga works a full count before grounding to shortstop, who throws the ball home, but the catcher doesn’t make a tag, allowing the run to score; Logan Halleman pinch runs for Allred. So still no outs and runners at first and second for Toney, who watches a ball go by before the Gators have a meeting at the mound.

Play resumes and Toney hits a grounder to the second baseman that looks like it’s tailor-made for a double play, but the Gators cannot pull it off; the runner is out at second, putting Red Raiders at the corners. The Rothrock then loads the bases by hitting Williams on the elbow during her swing — Florida challenges the call, but HBP stands.

Lis comes up for Texas Tech representing the go-ahead run with one out but is unable to capitalize as she watches a 59 mph changeup go by for a strikeout. Burns gives the ball a ride all the way to the right field warning track, but a Gator is there to make the catch, ending the threat.

Now in for the Red Raiders is right-hander Samantha Lincoln, who walks Wesolowski on four straight pitches and the rally continues. Comia hits a short chopper that the third baseman has to charge at to field, resulting in an infield base hit. With two on and two outs, Shumaker flies out to left field on the second pitch she sees. And thus ends the top of the fourth.

Thomas grounds the first pitch she sees in the top of the fourth to short for the first out; two pitches later, Grover hits a routine fly ball into right that is easily hauled in by the fielder for out No. 2. Cahalan keeps the inning alive by lining a screwball right down the middle into right, which is misplayed by the fielder, allowing her to take second.

Two pitches later, Walker sends a screwball low in the zone over the leftfield wall and onto the roof for a two-run homer and a four-run lead for the Gators. And that is it for Canady today.

(T4: Florida 5, Texas Tech 1)

The No. 9 hitter, Hailey Toney, gets hit by a 68 mph riseball after almost getting plunked earlier in the at-bat, putting a runner on base as the batting order resets. That brings up Game 1 hero Williams, who also gets hit by the very next pitch and Rothrock appears to be dealing with control issues here in the bottom of the third.

With two on and no outs, Lis flies out to right field, but the lead runner is able to advance to third, setting up a sac fly off the bat of Burns to put the Red Raiders on the board. Pannell pops the ball up right behind the second base bag but Comia loses the ball in the sun, allowing it to drop for a single.

With two on and two out now, Tim Walton comes out to chat with his infield before things can get out of hand. No worries, Terry flies out to the left fielder in foul territory and the threat is over.

Gabi Comia grounds the second pitch she sees from Canady to the first baseman, who tags the base for an unassisted out. Taylor Shumaker follows her by grounding another ball to first, but this one sneaks between the fielder and the foul line into the outfield for a double, and the Gators have a runner in scoring position with one out.

Erickson bloops a single into left field that brings in the lead runner on a wide throw to home, but she is thrown out trying to stretch to second. Still, the Gators get another run on the board. Brown goes down swinging at a 58 mph changeup to end the inning.

Kaitlyn Terry opens up the bottom of the frame by watching a 64 mph screwball that nips the low-outside corner of the zone for a strikeout. Mihyia Davis sends the very next pitch through the left side for a groundball single. Lauren Allred flies out to left field for out No. 2; two pitches later, Lag Quiroga lines out to left field to end the inning.

Kenleigh Cahalan starts off the top of the second inning by lining softly to the second baseman for the first out. Madison Walker swings at a 71 mph riseball inside at her shoulders for the second out.

Ella Wesolowski gives the ball a good run into straightaway center field, but the defender is there to catch it right in front of the warning track.

Kegan Rothrock’s 69 mph first offering is grounded by Mia Williams to the shortstop, who throws it to first for the first out. Four pitches later, a 67 mph riseball above the zone is swung at and missed by Jackie Lis for a quick second out. However, Jasmy Burns draws a four-pitch walk to keep the inning alive and give the Red Raiders their first baserunner of the game.

Tay Pannell swings at the first pitch she sees and grounds it to the third baseman, who promptly throws it to first to end the frame.

Shumaker starts things off by drawing a walk after working a full count before Jocelyn Erickson puts the Gators up early by sending a 70 mph screwball on the outer part of the plate over the left-centerfield wall for a two-run home run.

Ava Brown goes down looking at a changeup up in the zone for the first out of the inning. Townsend Thomas also strikes out looking at a riseball low and inside for out No. 2 and Kendall Grover makes it three Ks looking in a row on a 58 mph changeup low in the zone.
