MK Studios recently released their rendition of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (KFLL) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, serving the Miami area (Florida) and averaging 32.2 million passengers per year.

The airport was built on an abandoned golf course that had been destroyed by a hurricane a couple of years earlier. It opened in 1929 as “Merle Fogg Field”, featuring two unpaved runways.

It was commissioned by the US Navy at the start of WW2 and renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. The army heavily upgraded the airport: runways were paved, a control tower was built, and its main purpose was refitting civil airliners for war use.

The base was closed right after the end of the war and transferred to the local county, becoming Broward County International Airport.

Commercial flights began in 1953 with Mackey Air Transport’s route to Nassau. It took 4 more years for domestic activity to pop up, with Northeast Airlines and National flying to New York-Idlewild and Washington-National.

In 1959, the airport got its first permanent terminal and also its current name.

In the early 1980s, passenger facilities were expanded to keep up with demand, with the construction of 3 terminals that ultimately replaced the 1959 terminal.

There are plans to construct an airside terminal connection between Terminals 1, 2, and 3, the intermodal center, and Terminal 5. Furthermore, they intend to rebuild Terminal 3.

It’s an operating base for Allegiant Air and a focus city for JetBlue. Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Air Transat, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Avelo Airlines, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Delta Airlines, Flair Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Porter, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, Western Air, and WestJet also serve it.

The scenery features an accurate rendition of the airport, with custom ground textures, an up-to-date ground layout, detailed terminal buildings, custom animated jetways, performance-friendly optimization, and more.

It’s available on Contrail for roughly $22.48, requiring at least 3.48 GB of free hard disk space to install.
