BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — In Florida, the days of harmless pranks like ding-dong ditching may be numbered.

According to our news partners at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, law enforcement and school officials are warning that even simple acts like ding-dong ditching could result in serious consequences.

The Sun Sentinel reports that a recent incident in Broward County involved a group of masked teens repeatedly ringing doorbells and fleeing. The homeowner, alarmed by the behavior and concerned about a possible break-in, contacted authorities. Deputies responded and later issued warnings to the teens, emphasizing that such actions could lead to charges, including: trespassing or disorderly conduct.

The widespread use of doorbell cameras has transformed how these pranks are perceived, according to the Sun Sentinel. What was once fleeting mischief now leaves behind digital evidence, homeowners are more likely to report suspicious activity, and law enforcement is more likely to investigate, especially when footage shows behavior that could be interpreted as threatening.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) is also warning teens to avoid such trends. Port St. Lucie Police Master Sgt. Dominick Mesiti says these actions are not harmless pranks but crimes that can lead to trespassing, vandalism, or even burglary charges.

Our news partners at the Sun Sentinel conclude, the message from Florida authorities is clear: there’s no such thing as “just a prank” anymore. Teens and parents alike are being urged to reconsider actions that could escalate into legal trouble.
