JFRD: 1 dead, 12 displaced after apartment fire in Jacksonville

An apartment fire in Jacksonville early Sunday morning left one man dead, a woman injured and 12 people displaced, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

JFRD Battalion Chief Aaron Bebernitz told First Coast News crews were dispatched to Landon Imperial Apartments at 4:17 a.m.

When they arrived, crews observed “heavy fire conditions” and smoke coming from units on the first and second floor of the apartments, according to Bebernitz.

Bebernitz said firefighters entered one unit and rescued a man and woman, as they were then taken to a local trauma center, where the man died. The woman has since been released.

Another JFRD spokesperson said seven adults and five children were displaced from the fire. The Red Cross is now assisting them.

At this time, it is unknown what caused the fire. Bebernitz said “it’ll take some time,” while adding that the state fire marshal will investigate, with help from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit.
