A man was found shot and hiding in the parking lot of a UPS facility in Hialeah early Thursday, police said.
The incident happened at the facility at 6001 East 8th Avenue, which is also near the Hialeah Police Department.
Authorities said they responded to reports of a shooting at around 3:20 a.m.
Once there they found a victim with a gunshot wound hiding in the parking lot. He was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, but more information on his condition was not immediately available.
A woman told NBC6 that she went to the facility to pick someone up from work and heard multiple gunshots.
Meanwhile, a man who did not want to be identified said his friend is an employee who unloads packages for UPS at the facility. He said his friend texted him saying someone was going to jump him and asking for help.
“My friend texted me before anything happened,” he said. “My heart dropped ’cause he texted me at 3:30. I wasn’t able to respond until like 4:00 so it was like a whole debacle, so I had to get down here and figure out what’s happening, but when I went up there they didn’t want to tell me anything.”
The man said police put his friend in the back of a patrol car.
There is still no word on any arrests, but police did say that they “quickly detained individuals attempting to flee the scene near East 8th Avenue and East 56th Street.”
“The area was immediately secured and remains an active crime scene as detectives continue their investigation,” police said.
A UPS spokesperson said the incident didn’t affect operations.
“We’re aware of a situation outside of our Hialeah facility. As this is an active police investigation, we’ll refer you to authorities for additional questions,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
