Long before it was a three-day weekend, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. It began just after the Civil War as a simple, heartfelt movement to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with the first flowers of spring.

What started in small towns across the country remains our most solemn local tradition. Today, that spirit of remembrance continues right here on Key Biscayne.

The Village of Key Biscayne invites residents to gather this morning at 9:00 a.m. at Village Green Park for the annual Memorial Day ceremony.

The program will include a color guard presentation, guest speakers, a ceremonial wreath laying, and musical performances. It is a quiet opportunity for the community to gather in patriotic tributes, and shared tradition to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
