TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Memorial Day travel period continues through Monday, with millions of Americans expected to travel by car despite higher gas prices.
AAA projects more than 39 million people will drive over the holiday weekend nationwide, marking a slight increase from last year and making driving the most popular form of travel.
The agency said one of the busiest travel periods will be Monday afternoon, between noon and 5 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to leave before 10 a.m. to avoid the heaviest congestion.
“We’re still seeing very strong demand,” AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said. “A lot of people still want to travel, which means you’re still going to see congestion on the road and busy airports as well. Our advice would be to avoid the afternoons, leave early in the mornings or late at night.”

With heavy traffic expected, AAA is also urging drivers to slow down and move over for disabled vehicles and roadside responders.
During last year’s Memorial Day weekend, AAA responded to more than 350,000 roadside assistance calls nationwide for issues including dead batteries, flat tires and empty fuel tanks. Drivers are encouraged to check their tires, battery and fluid levels before traveling.
