May 26, 2026 – St. Petersburg City Council will consider an ordinance that would designate the entire city as a bird sanctuary. The proposal would prohibit the shooting, trapping, injuring or disturbing of birds, as well as their eggs and young, and would authorize the city to post official sanctuary boundary signs. If approved, a formal request will be sent to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for consideration at its July meeting, with a public hearing scheduled for May 28’s City Council meeting.
