TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County School Board approved a measure that would increase their property tax rate to bolster teacher salaries.
At its Tuesday meeting, the school board voted to send the measure to the Leon County Commission, who will ultimately vote to add it to the the ballot for the November election.
There was only one opposing vote on the measure at Tuesday’s meeting.
According to the referendum, a levy of an ad valorem operating millage of one mill annually would be imposed from July 1 2027 through June 30, 2031. Revenue generated by the property tax would be used “to increase compensation for teachers and staff, enhance school security operations, and fund essential school programs including arts education and athletics.”

If Leon County Commissioners approve the referendum, voters would ultimately decide at the polls if the measure is passed.
LCS is also seeking to continue a half-cent sales tax that has been in place since 2002.
Essentially, anyone who buys an item inside Leon County pays a half-cent towards the school district.
At its May 12 meeting, county commissioners passed a motion to place that referendum on the November ballot.
The half-cent sales tax has brought in $400 million from 2012 to 2026, according to an LCS presentation.
Leon County Schools are facing budget issues that leaders largely attribute to school choice and lack of funding from the state, but critics say are also borne out of misspending.
