Miami, FL – Several terminals at Miami International Airport were temporarily evacuated Monday after authorities investigated an unattended bag that prompted a large emergency response during the busy Memorial Day travel period.
According to the Miami Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded after airport personnel reported unattended luggage inside one of the terminal areas.
As a precaution, officials evacuated portions of the airport connected to gates 11 through 19 while bomb squad teams and K 9 units investigated the item.
Video from the airport showed travelers being escorted out of terminal areas as law enforcement officers blocked access points and secured sections of the facility.
Large crowds gathered outside while authorities worked to determine whether the bag posed a potential threat.
Airport officials said bomb squad personnel examined the item before investigators later confirmed there was no danger to the public.
Authorities eventually issued an all clear and allowed passengers and airport employees to reenter the affected areas.
No injuries were reported during the incident, according to officials.
The temporary evacuation caused delays and congestion throughout parts of the airport as security checkpoints and terminal access points remained closed during the investigation.
Travelers were advised to expect possible delays while airport operations gradually resumed.
Miami International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States and serves as a major travel hub for domestic and international passengers throughout South Florida.
Law enforcement officials reminded travelers to immediately report suspicious or unattended items inside airport terminals and transportation facilities as security teams continue monitoring activity during high traffic travel periods.
Authorities said the investigation into the unattended bag has concluded and normal airport operations were restored following the all clear from bomb squad personnel.
