TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Two years after tornadoes swept through parts of Leon County, one assisted living facility has finally rebuilt.
St. Augustine Plantation endured quite an experience on the morning of May 10, 2024.
Staff said there were only 15 minutes between the tornado warning and the time trees started falling on the roof of the bedrooms of the memory care unit. Water came pouring in from the storm, and staff had to rush the patients to safety, which they said can be a challenge with dementia patients.
Executive Director Megan Griffin said they train for scenarios like what happened on May 10, and the staff executed that training completely despite not having much time. She says they are grateful no one was hurt.
“When the storm did come through, when the trees started falling, when the rain started pouring in, they were all in a safe location. And I guess I really can’t stress enough how important those drills are so that the team knew the proper protocols and the team knew what to do to keep our residents safe,” Griffin said.
