JACKSONVILLE – Details are the priority now, and focus.
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is entering Year 2 in Head Coach Liam Coen‘s offense – and as the 2026 offseason continues, Lawrence says he’s undoubtedly “way further” ahead of where he was this time last offseason.
That means specifics matter now. A lot.
“It’s really about being intentional every day,” he said.
Lawrence and Coen spoke to the media on Tuesday, Day 1 of Jaguars 2026 Organized Team Activities – as did Offensive Coordinator Grant Udinksi. They spoke of how Lawrence, who finished fifth in NFL Most Valuable Player balloting last season, and the offense can improve moving forward.
“You’re always looking to grow,” Udinski said. “The core foundations and principles stay the same –and hopefully, they stay the same every single year. Whether it’s improving on the things he did well last year or whether it’s the areas of improvement that maybe we didn’t quite meet our standard, we’re going to try to find improvement in all those areas.
“It never really stops in terms of our expectation for growth and trying to get better, but there are certainly areas of focus based on doing something well or doing something that we might have already done well, but we know that there’s more room to grow in those areas.”
Lawrence on Tuesday spoke of avoiding the “trap” of going “through the motions just because you know the offense.”
“Our focus as a whole unit has been really good on the details and really mastering all the little things,” he said. “Now when we hear the play call, we hear it, we know it, we know what to do, we don’t even really have to think about it.
“It’s focusing on all the details to take us to the next level of being a great offense.”
Coen said rather than expanding the scheme in Year 2 with Lawrence, this offseason is about honing it – an approach similar to that coaches took during last season’s Week 8 bye, after which Lawrence threw 20 touchdowns with seven interceptions and seven rushing touchdowns.
“It’s more refining the finer things of what he can do at a high level,” Coen said. “What are the areas that we put on the shelf to improve upon? We’re attacking those now.”
Added Coen, “Last year, it’s just a lot more to take in and your mind is racing a little bit because you’re thinking about a lot. This year, to have the system down, a bunch of guys that have played together, obviously there’s a few new pieces but majority of us really know it.
“We can focus on talking about all the details of each route and how it’s going to adjust versus certain coverages and then also making tweaks to the concepts and to the plays that we already have in. [We’re] trying to see what is better and making some tweaks.”
