An investigation was underway after a shooting involving an off-duty Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy in South Beach left a person critically injured early Wednesday, authorities said.
Authorities said the incident happened at around 1:12 a.m. at South Pointe Park at 1 Washington Avenue.
Miami Beach Police said preliminary information indicates that an off-duty law enforcement officer was “involved in an incident during which a firearm was discharged and a subject was struck.”
Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials later confirmed it was a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy who fired their weapon.
The subject was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.
The names of those involved were not immediately revealed, nor was a possible motive for the shooting.
The FDLE is investigating, as is standard practice in law enforcement shootings.
