A casual swim recently turned into an unexpected encounter with international contraband. While taking a dip at Fort Lauderdale Beach, a Florida man stumbled upon a mysterious package bobbing in the shallow water. Instead of finding typical marine debris, the beachgoer discovered what authorities suspect is property that could belong to a major drug cartel.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the package initially appeared to contain millions of dollars in cash due to the way it was wrapped. The contents were bundled in brick-like stacks and sealed tightly with tape, giving the impression that it was money. However, the situation took a turn after the man contacted authorities, who later determined that the suspicious package, which was found on the shore at around 11 a.m., was likely filled with drugs instead.
Fort Lauderdale Police confirmed with the outlet, saying, “The item was suspected narcotics.” And based on the amount, fans are speculating that it could be tied to a cartel. Some fans said he should have kept the package, believing that it was actually cash. However, the man needed to report the incident to the authorities under Florida law.
This Is Nothing New In Florida
South Florida’s coastal waters have long been considered a major route for international drug trafficking activity. Based on past incidents reported by NBC Miami and the U.S. Coast Guard, smugglers frequently move drugs through the Caribbean and into the United States using speedboats, fishing vessels, and concealed compartments aboard larger ships. Traffickers also dump narcotics overboard while attempting to evade authorities or survive rough sea conditions.

According to Business Insider, these incidents do not just happen by chance. That reality helps explain why tightly wrapped drug bundles occasionally wash ashore on Florida beaches or are discovered floating offshore by unsuspecting boaters and swimmers. UPI and the New York Post have documented several incidents involving cocaine packages surfacing along the state’s coastline after being discarded at sea.
To combat these maritime smuggling operations, federal agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection maintain a strong presence across the region. NBC Miami reported that interdiction efforts regularly result in the seizure of millions of dollars’ worth of illegal narcotics before they can reach the mainland.
Because of these ongoing trafficking activities, authorities consistently advise civilians not to touch suspicious packages found near the water and instead report them immediately, as the materials may be dangerous and connected to active criminal investigations. This is what the beachgoer did. The investigation remains open and there have been no official suspects.
