The Rising Stitch is Tallahassee’s newest fabric store and studio.

Located at 2030 Thomasville Road, Suite 7-8, the retail chain had its soft opening Oct. 11. The store provides fabrics and lessons to quilters, crafters and sewing enthusiasts.

Rebecca Pitts and her mother Katherine Pitts own the business.

The daughter said she picked up the hobby years ago and created Civil War reenactment costumes, ball gowns and other creations.

About 10 years ago, she was able to revive her mother’s love for sewing when she got an early diagnosis for Parkinson’s disease.

They both felt Tallahassee lost a valuable resource this year with the closing of Joann Fabrics on Thomasville Road after the Ohio-based retail chain announced plans to close over 800 stores nationwide in March.

Joann Fabrics has since made a sort of-comeback after Michaels, the craft store retail chain, purchased Joann’s intellectual property in June and debuted “The Knit & Sew Shop” featuring Joann branding and private-label brands from the former retailer.

“With Joann’s closing in town, there really became nowhere else here that focused on non-quilting type sewing,” Pitts said. “You have quilt shops in town but there’s no garment-making, costuming or anything like that.”

The store is still in an extended soft opening mode and expects to receive more inventory soon. It plans to have a grand opening in early November.

In addition, she said the store will specialize in the use and maintenance of Janome machines.

“We’re hoping to provide a sense of community and a space that, whether you’re threading a needle for the first time or you’ve been doing this your whole life,” Pitts said, adding it will be a “space to connect and grow your hobby.”
