A woman who ran from the scene of a St. Petersburg motorcycle crash with two children in tow earlier this month faces an upgraded charge after the motorcyclist died, police said.
Promise Jermeise Burnett, 31, is now being charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death after 18-year-old Yaudel Enrique Rosabal Fernandez died over the weekend from injuries suffered in the May 9 crash, the St. Petersburg Police Department announced Tuesday.
Burnett, of St. Petersburg, was driving a Toyota Camry west on 38th Avenue North about 10 p.m. when she tried to turn left on 33rd Street North, police said. Fernandez, who was riding a Kawasaki Ninja east on 38th Avenue, struck the passenger side of the Toyota.
Burnett ran from the scene with two children and returned about 30 to 40 minutes later, according to police. The children were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Fernandez was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg.
Burnett was arrested hours later on a charge of leaving the scene of crash involving serious injury, and she wascited for failing to yield the right of way. She was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and was being held there Tuesday with bond set at $100,000, records show.
Burnett has been appointed a public defender and pleaded not guilty to the original charge.
