TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Florida State University (FSU) professor has launched a podcast discussing how the arts have changed the lives of those in prison.
Dave Gussak is an FSU professor of Art Therapy and the director of the Institute for Arts & Art Therapy with the Impisoned program that provides art therapy to incarcerated people. Gussak said the podcast is aimed at raising awareness of the positive impact of arts programs in prison.
“I’m incredibly excited to bring together leading voices from across the field for conversations about emerging research and personal stories about the impacts of art and art therapy in prison settings,” Gussak said.
The podcast is entitled ‘Creativity Unconfined’ and is being produced by two FSU art therapy graduate students.

“My hope for this podcast is that it can be a space that’s welcoming and informative not only for therapy practitioners, but for anyone—including corrections professionals, community activists and artists, and of course, formerly incarcerated individuals and loved ones.”
The first episode features an artist and activist named Chris Fausto Cabrera, who says art and writing helped him survive 21 years in a Minnesota prison.
The first 8 episodes of the podcast are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube starting May 31 with new episodes every Monday.
