A rocket belonging to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has exploded during a test at the launch pad in Florida.

Homes shook in nearby Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach around 9 last night. Blue Origin said its New Glenn rocket exploded during an engine-firing test and that everyone is safe. New Glenn is the rocket that Bezos’ company must use to launch landers to the moon for NASA. It made its debut more than a year ago, soaring three times.

First-time unemployment claims in Florida eased for a second consecutive week following a spike when nearly 5,000 Spirit Airlines workers were laid off in the state.

Yesterday the U.S. Department of Labor estimated 5,800 initial unemployment applications were filed in Florida last week. That’s down from a revised count of 6,200 for the week ending May 16th and 8,100 for the week ending May 9th. That’s after Florida-based Spirit Airlines advised workers that operations were ceasing immediately. The state had averaged 5,600 claims a week over the prior eight weeks. Spirit’s downfall affected 4,800 employees in Broward, Miami-Dade and Orange counties.

The local organization Save the Garden is suing the city of Clearwater arguing that their citizen-led petition was blocked unlawfully.

WMNF’s Joeniyah Carter reports the city clerk disregarded over half of the signatures in the petition.

About 300 dogs are looking for their forever homes during a mega-adoption event today through the weekend in Plant City.
