The Key Biscayne community composting program, run by A Zero Waste Culture, launched in 2019 to compost wasted food and other organics, reduce methane emissions and create nutrient-rich soil.
Members collect food scraps during the week and bring them on Saturdays to the Farmers Market at the Key Biscayne Community Church, 355 Glenridge Road.
Below is the environmental impact of the Island’s composting this past week:
• 1,840 pounds of food scraps collected
• 398,200 pounds collected so far or 199.10 tons
• 128.82 metric tons of greenhouse gases prevented from entering the atmosphere
That’s like:
• 328,714 miles driven
• 10.44 million smartphone charges
• 2,157 trees growing for 10 years
