A special election to replace a Jacksonville city councilman following the announcement of his resignation will be held in August, the Duval County Supervisor of Elections Office announced Friday.
Jacksonville City Council and Mayor Donna Deegan passed a resolution on Tuesday, approving a “Special First Consolidated Government Election” to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The election will be held to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of City Council Member Terrance Freeman, At-Large Group 1. Freeman is set to run for an elected position in the Florida Legislature.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes in the election, according to the resolution, then the two candidates with the highest vote totals will participate in a special general election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the elections office stated.
According to Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland, the number of petitions needed to qualify for candidacy for City Council At-Large Group 1 is 1,855.
The qualifying fees are as follows:
$3,408.24 for partisan candidates
$2,272.16 for candidates with no party affiliation
Qualifying begins at noon on June 11, and ends at noon on June 12, according to the elections office.
