FLORIDA — Lawmakers are returning to Tallahassee on Monday for another special session, this one to discuss property taxes.
It comes after they passed the state budget last week.
Gov. Ron DeSantis says he would like to see legislation that will gradually phase out some property taxes on homes with the homestead exemption.
The proposed plan would do this by giving a $150,000 exemption followed by a $250,000 exemption a few years later.
But the proposal would only apply to people who have owned their home for at least five years.
So, people who have moved to Florida recently would not see the tax exemption immediately.
Gov. DeSantis believes this will be a big financial relief for families. But critics argue that losing that tax money will hurt essential services in cities and counties.
If lawmakers pass a measure, it would still need Florida voters’ approval on the November ballot.
