TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida State baseball is headed to the Tallahassee Regional championship game thanks to a 7-4 win over Northern Illinois in 10 innings on Sunday night.
The Seminoles, as the away team, took the game’s first lead in the top of the first. With John Stuetzer on second base, Brody DeLamielleure doubles down the left field line to put Florida State up 1-0.
Northern Illinois counters in the bottom of the inning with a Gavin Baldwin two-run home run to left field, his first of two homers in the game. The second one cleared the high right field fence in the fourth inning to tie the game at three.
The Seminoles had taken a 3-2 lead on an RBI groundout, then a Stuetzer single to score Gabe Fraser in the second inning.
The game stayed in a 3-3 deadlock until the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, the Chris Knier walked a Huskies batter to give Northern Illinois the lead, 4-3. The inning could’ve been a lot more detrimental for Florida State as first baseman Ben Barrett saved a possible bases-clearing hit down the line and turned it into a double play.
On a hit-and-run in the eighth inning, the Seminoles tied the game at 4-4. Nathan Cmeyla crushed a double to the wall in left-center field to score Hunter Carns from first base.
Both teams were held scoreless in the ninth, so the game goes to extra innings. With runners on the corners, Hunter Carns lifts a sac fly to center field to give the Seminoles a 5-4 lead.
With two outs and a runner one, Barrett crushes a home run over the right field fence for a 7-4 lead, one which held as the final score.
Florida State will face St. John’s in the regional championship. The Seminoles will need to beat the Red Storm twice on Monday to advance to Super Regionals.
