ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A massive, multi-agency crackdown on violent crime and narcotics has led to a wave of arrests and the seizure of high-powered, illegal weapons in St. Lucie County over a blistering three-day blitz.
Dubbed “Operation: Summer Heat,” the proactive crime suppression initiative pairs local law enforcement with federal heavy hitters, according to authorities. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and the Fort Pierce Police Department joined forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to target gang activity, remove illegal firearms, and disrupt local drug pipelines.
According to officials, the coordinated effort has already resulted in 10 total arrests and the removal of several dangerous weapons from local streets. The latest six arrests come from an announcement by the sheriff’s office on Monday.

Days of Disruptions and Traffic Stops
The operation kicked off with intense, intelligence-driven policing and highly visible traffic enforcement, catching several wanted individuals and armed suspects in the net.
On the second day, detectives said they tracked down 25-year-old Karon Wade of Fort Pierce, arresting him on an outstanding warrant for Fleeing and Eluding with Disregard for Safety, alongside Reckless Driving Causing Damage.
In a separate incident, Michael Apolaro, 38, also of Fort Pierce, was booked on multiple narcotics charges, including Possession of Cocaine, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, according to SLCSO.
On Day 3, the focus shifted heavily toward illegal firearms. Tonazj Meckye Alexander, 19, was arrested and charged with Carrying a Concealed Firearm. Meanwhile, Shane Anthony Cole, 36, was picked up on an outstanding felony warrant for Criminal Use of Personal Identification and First-Degree Petit Theft, the sheriff’s office said.
Law enforcement also detained two juveniles on firearm-related charges.

The sweep’s recent success builds directly on the momentum established the moment the initiative hit the pavement. According to previous coverage, the opening day of the crackdown immediately signaled trouble for neighborhood criminals, netting three adult arrests, a juvenile arrest, three seized guns, and 85 grams of marijuana right out of the gate. The sheriff’s office said key incidents from Day 1 included the arrest of a convicted felon carrying a Glock equipped with an automatic switch, a foot pursuit of an armed 16-year-old, and the discovery of an abandoned AR-15-style pistol.

A Lethal Haul Taken Off the Streets
Sheriff Richard Del Toro emphasized that the primary goal of the operation is to identify and apprehend violent offenders before they can inflict harm on the community.

Of particular concern to law enforcement was the recovery of an AR-15 style pistol with altered serial numbers, as well as an illegal machine gun conversion device, commonly known as a “switch.” Switches allow semi-automatic handguns or rifles to fire at a fully automatic rate, posing a severe threat to both citizens and responding authorities.
