Toll booth worker killed after impaired driver crashes on Florida beach, sheriff says

  • June 2, 2026

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (WCJB) – Volusia County Sheriff’s Office officials say a toll booth worker was killed Monday after a possibly impaired driver crashed into the booth and drove onto the beach.

Deputies say just before 1 p.m., a pickup headed eastbound on Dunlawton Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores struck a beach ramp toll booth with an attendant inside.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the toll booth was crushed, and Tammy Joe Baker, 62, was killed. He said the truck was going 40 mph at the time of the crash.

The truck continued onto the beach, into the ocean, and got stuck in the sand.

The driver was taken into custody. Sheriff Chitwood said he could smell a heavy odor of alcohol from the vehicle.

The driver will have her blood alcohol level tested, and the appropriate charges will be filed based on the results, the sheriff said.
