TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) – An overhaul of Florida’s tax system is headed to voters in November after lawmakers voted Governor Ron DeSantis’s property tax proposal through on Tuesday.
In committee, both chambers amended the governor’s plan to allow schools to still levy property taxes.
Under the plan lawmakers passed, those with primary homes worth $250,000 or less would pay zero property tax come fiscal year 2028. The proposal would see the legislature eventually create a schedule to abolish all homestead property taxes.

DeSantis argues these property tax cuts will provide relief to residents under the strain of a struggling economy. However, some say the cuts could harm local governments.
During discussion on Tuesday, some lawmakers raised concerns about the ability of local voters to fund their own community needs, but others say this proposal doesn’t prohibit any sort of special assessment or fee and directed local governments to look at their spending.
Senator Corey Simon from Tallahassee expressed concern over how the bill will impact rural counties, but said he voted yes to give Florida residents a voice.
“They can be heard at the polls,” Simon said. “That means a lot to me. It’s our responsibility to educate the public with true facts.”
For the bill to pass, 60% of both the House and Senate had to agree.
The Florida House passed the Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes resolution 75-26, while the Senate passed it 30-9.
Voters will have the final say on property tax cuts in November.
