TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Justice Department is rolling out a new Model Cities Initiative, and Tallahassee is eligible for millions in federal public safety money.
The plan sets aside nearly $300 million nationwide to help two to four cities cut crime, improve mental health and drug treatment and beef up law enforcement resources.
To qualify, a city has to serve at least 100,000 people — a threshold Tallahassee meets — and submit one unified application from local leaders working together.

The money can be used to hire and retain officers, build or upgrade facilities or buy new law enforcement equipment. It can also fund mental health resources, jail and prison reentry programs and youth crime prevention.
Cities have until September 1 to submit their proposals.
