The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office launched two new websites containing databases of missing persons and active warrants throughout the city Wednesday.
The announcement comes after the success of the “unsolved crimes” page that launched in 2023. Officer Mark Romano, Director of Patrol and Enforcement for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, says community involvement is crucial when it comes to solving crimes.
“Police work is, it’s a dangerous job,” Director Romano said. “We just ask for information from the community. We don’t ask them to take any action. We don’t ask them to hold people or stay where they saw the person or give any other information than just tell us who they are, or tell us where they’re at, and then let the police do their job.”
Since the unsolved crimes page launched, JSO says they’ve received more than 700 tips from community members and have positively identified about 600 suspects. Director Romano has been spearheading this initiative, coming up with the idea for the “unsolved crimes” page as well as the new “missing persons” and “wanted” pages.
“You click on a picture of a wanted person or of a person who’s committing a crime that we don’t know who that is,” Romano said. “You don’t have to leave your name. We’re not gonna come track you down. We just need the information to help us, give us that investigative lead to hold that person accountable.”
