JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Duval County judge sentenced the man responsible for a deadly shooting at the Valencia Way Apartments to 17 years in prison Tuesday.

Dwayne Martin, 32, was handed his sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of 36-year-old Bernard Troutman Jr.

The shooting happened at the apartment complex on October 30, 2023. According to Martin’s arrest report, police responded that afternoon to find Troutman dead from a gunshot wound to the neck or head.

In one of the initial 911 calls, police reported hearing a witness yell “Wayne just shot that guy!” Martin was positively identified by two witnesses from the scene. One said they saw him shoot Troutman as he walked away unarmed, and then run away.
