JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) –
A fire at a Furniture Plus warehouse is now under control after it erupted Wednesday afternoon, spreading to the store behind it.
The fire on North Marine Boulevard injured five firefighters as they worked to contain the spread from the warehouse to the store. All five were treated for injuries and later released.
Timothy Williams witnessed the fire.
“We heard a big noise, explosion type noise. At first you couldn’t really see the flames, like I said you could see the majority of the smoke,” Williams said.
Drone footage showed a portion of the roof collapsing.
Jacksonville Fire Chief Tee Tallman said the size of the building and heat created difficult conditions for crews.
“The guys and the girls, it’s a large building, with a heavy fire load, obviously the temperature and stuff it’s very strenuous. The heat causes a lot of stress on them too,” Tallman said.
North Marine Boulevard, which was blocked off following the fire, has reopened. Fire crews will remain on scene throughout the evening and overnight to put out hotspots and completely contain the fire.
The cause and extent of the fire damage are still being investigated.
Furniture Plus posted a statement on Facebook saying everyone is okay and that they will keep everyone updated.
