JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Jacksonville Police said what was initially described as an explosive device at the railroad overpass Thursday — causing a temporary evacuation — was later identified as a part of the tracks.

Officers with the Jacksonville Police Department responded to N. Westgate Ave. around 3:30 p.m. for a report of a “suspicious device.” The area was temporarily shut down and evacuated. After officials confirmed that it was a component of the railroad tracks — and not the explosive device that was originally reported — the area was opened back up to the public.

“The Jacksonville Police Department would like to thank all those who were affected in the area for moving quickly to an area of safety when asked to do so,” the police department wrote in a post on Facebook.
