Woman, 25, dies after column falls from top of luxury skyscraper under construction

MIAMI, Fla. (WKRC) – A woman died after a column fell from a structure that was under construction.

According to WTVJ, Maria Fernanda González Garcia, 25, a construction worker, died shortly after arriving at a hospital after she was struck by a structural column that fell from a luxury skyscraper under construction in Miami, Florida.

According to reports, the incident occurred at the Okan Tower construction site on North Miami Avenue near Northwest 6th Street.

Officials said a structural column that was being erected on the building’s top floor fell, trapping several workers beneath it. Multiple workers were injured by the falling structure and were transported to a local trauma center, according to WTVJ.

González Garcia died shortly after arriving at the hospital. A male worker also suffered serious injuries and faces a lengthy recovery, according to the report.
