The Key Biscayne community composting program, run by A Zero Waste Culture, launched in 2019 to compost wasted food and other organics, reduce methane emissions and create nutrient-rich soil. Members collect food scraps during the week and bring them on Saturdays to the Farmers Market at the Key Biscayne Community Church, 355 Glenridge Road.
This week, the community program surpassed 200 tons of food scraps diverted from landfill through composting. This milestone belongs to the dedicated families, schools, businesses, volunteers and supporters who have participated we launched.
Below is the environmental impact of the Island’s composting:
• 1,906 pounds of food scraps collected
• 400,106 pounds collected so far or 199.10 tons
• 130.013 metric tons of greenhouse gases prevented from entering the atmosphere.
That’s like:
• 330,288 miles driven
• 10.48 million smartphone charges
• 2,167 trees growing for 10 years
