TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Hurricane season began June 1 and hundreds of people were in line Saturday to get free, hurricane preparedness boxes in Tallahassee.
Joey Hampton with Quincy Farm Share said the event is important for families. “It’s not always something that you can go out and get at the last minute,” Hampton said. The organization partnered with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) to put on Saturday’s distribution.
The drive started around 9 a.m., but Hampton said cars were in line as early as 4 a.m. “It says that there is a need for that.”

People received a variety of items in the hurricane preparedness box, including things like candles, flashlights, ready-to-eat meals, ponchos, emergency blankets, feminine kits, and hydration packets.
Hampton said it’s important to start planning for a hurricane now, as opposed to when a storm is approaching. “They’re prepared and have peace of mind as well,” he said. “It’ll save your life.”
Quincy Farm Share and GEM gave boxes to 500 families on Saturday, according to Hampton.
