The city of Port St. Lucie hosted its 20th Hurricane Preparedness Expo to help residents stay safe during the storm season.Those who attended got to meet WPBF 25 News’ First Warning Weather Team and have their questions answered in person. On hand were Chief Meteorologist Cris Martinez and Meteorologists Glenn Glazer, Nikki Sheaks and Brooke Silverang. But hurricane season is just starting. You learned a lot today, so know your zone, make a plan, build a kit and stay informed. Thank you to our vendors, sponsors, local meteorologists and emergency managers for making today such a success.”The family-friendly event featured nearly 50 booths specializing in hurricane-ready products and information.A new Kid Zone featured hands-on hurricane education, including coloring activities, emergency kit building and a fun scavenger hunt. There was a new Wind Simulator Experience that demonstrated 78 mph winds, the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane.There also was a photo booth, family-friendly games and a raffle featuring preparedness-themed prizes.An emergency management panel features specialists from St. Lucie, Indian River and Martin counties and the city of Port St. Lucie.WPBF was a sponsor of the event.The hurricane season began June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30. In February, WPBF celebrated bringing South Florida the most accurate weather forecast for 13 years.
