TAMPA, Fla. — Football is fun. At least at Baker Mayfield’s annual youth football camp it is.
Boys and girls ages six to 15 filled the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ indoor practice facility. Under the guidance of the Bucs starting quarterback, the kids ran through a variety of drills. And at times, it was hard to tell who was having more fun – the kids or Mayfield.
“I remember being their age, looking up to guys who played my position and wanting to be around them and have fun and just enjoy it,” Mayfield said.
There were Baker Mayfield jerseys everywhere. He was the favorite of the day. Mayfield appreciates the support and loves that he can give back to the community that he is raising his family in.
“Getting more people involved, getting everybody involved,” he said. “The more, the better. The more the merrier when it comes to football.”
One of the camp participants sporting a Mayfield jersey was 12-year-old Skylar Vanvaerenbergh. She wants to play flag football in the future and was soaking up all the knowledge at the camp. And of course, she had to rep her favorite player.
“He’s the best player and he has such great leadership,” Skylar said.
Mayfield remembers attending camps as a kid and wants these young-ins to have a similar experience. He once dreamed of playing the NFL and now he is. He knows a lot do dreams were born at his camp.
“That’s the best part,” Mayfield said. “And when I say that’s surreal, that’s the best part about it. I remember going to different football camps as a kid. I loved it, so to be able to do it and pay it forward’s awesome.”
