CAPE CANAVERAL — Specialized vessels used to recover spaceflight hardware after launches are currently based at Port Canaveral, but St. Lucie County is exploring plans to establish similar rocket recovery operations at the Port of Fort Pierce.
St. Lucie County officials recently discussed a proposal to position the Port of Fort Pierce as a hub for recovering reusable rocket components and other launch-related hardware following missions from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Rocket recovery involves retrieving reusable launch vehicle components, such as booster stages and other hardware, after they return to Earth following a launch. The process allows aerospace companies to inspect, refurbish and reuse equipment, helping reduce costs and support more frequent missions.
Under the county’s master plan, the Port of Fort Pierce could serve as a key support center for recovering rocket components from launches conducted at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Recovered hardware would be transported to the port for processing and handling.
The proposed launch vehicle recovery facility would include a dedicated access road connecting the site to North Second Street and a security checkpoint designed to meet federal and commercial security standards.
County officials presented the concept and gathered public feedback during a meeting at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club.
