JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CBS12) — A graduation moment in Jacksonville is going viral after an emotional family reaction turned a routine ceremony into something unforgettable.

A viral video shared by the Newsome family shows high school graduate Tyon Newsome walking across the stage on May 27, as his uncle, Antonio Brown, watches from the crowd, overwhelmed with emotion. The video has spread quickly across social media, with thousands of viewers connecting to the moment.

“My nephew. The first boy, man, first male. On my mama and dad to walk across the stage,” said Antonio Brown, Tyon’s uncle.

What could have been just another graduation clip stands out because of the weight behind it. For Brown, the moment represents more than a diploma. It reflects years of struggle, perseverance, and the importance of breaking generational barriers.

“But seeing him get to finish it and complete it the right way. That really meant a lot to me,” Brown said.

Tyon admits the road to graduation wasn’t easy. Like many students, he faced moments where he questioned whether he could make it.

“I almost quit a couple of times…” said Tyon Newsome, a high school graduate.

“I thought I couldn’t do it. I thought it was, I thought it was too hard for me,” Newsome said.

Still, he pushed forward, determined to change his path.

“Seeing like around like my my surroundings and stuff, you know, people don’t finish school and stuff,” Newsome said.

I didn’t want to end up how they ended up.

That determination is part of what made the moment so emotional for his family. Brown says young people often face pressure to follow the wrong crowd.

“It’s a lot of followers out here, and all the followers getting left, they’re getting followed to the grave and to the jail yard, you know what I’m saying?” Brown said.

“We got to make sure they complete the mission, you know. That’s our goal. We got to make sure they finish and do it. If we didn’t, they got to finish,” Brown said.

As the viral video continues to circulate, many people online say they see themselves in Tyon’s story. Social media has been flooded with comments from first-generation graduates and families celebrating similar milestones.

The moment has even drawn attention from rapper Lil Boosie, who shared his admiration and said he was proud.

Back in Jacksonville, the family says the attention has been uplifting. What started as a personal celebration has turned into something much bigger.

“I just wanna let him know, man. I’m proud of you, man. You did that for me, for the whole family, you hear me?” Brown said.

For them, this milestone marks the beginning of a new chapter and a new legacy.

“No matter how hard I get, I got your back. It’s only up from here for sure,” Brown said.
