TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A former Tallahassee postal worker pleaded guilty to several charges including theft of a mail key, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Taija Avion Smith, 25, pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit mail theft, theft of a mail key, bank fraud conspiracy and multiple counts of aggravated identity theft.
Jaheed Anthony Williams, 24, also from Tallahassee, pleaded guilty to those same charges.
Court documents show that between March 2021 and May 2024, Smith was a postal employee in Tallahassee. Due to her job, she had access to a postal key, which she is accused of stealing and giving to Williams.
Smith and Williams then conspired to steal mail, including mailed checks that were fraudulently deposited, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Court records show that Smith also fraudulently used online bank login credentials that did not belong to her as part of the conspiracy.
Smith and Williams face up to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit mail theft, up to 10 years for unlawful possession of a mail key, up to 30 years for bank fraud conspiracy and a mandatory consecutive term of two years on each of the identity theft counts.
Williams also faces up to five years for theft of mail and up to 30 years for each bank fraud count.
Sentencing is scheduled for later this year.
