An earthquake off of Havana Monday afternoon was felt hundreds of miles away in Florida, shaking up residents from Miami to Orlando.
The quake, which took place at 2 p.m. sharp, had a magnitude of 6.4 and took place 73 miles northwest of western Cuba, according to the U.S. Geological Service. It could be felt 310 miles from the epicenter.
People in downtown Orlando, Winter Park, Davenport and Walt Disney World said on social media that they felt it. So too did people in Cape Coral, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa.
The quake “just made our building shake in St. Petersburg FL. Our studio lights were shaking!” posted X user @Mike_Clay.
“Yo I think we just had an earthquake in Orlando and that is absolutely not supposed to happen,” posted Bluesky user @makeitunclear.bksy.social.
Amanda Dotten wrote on X, “Sarasota! Shook the whole house!” while user @Baba_Tunde wrote, “Miami Beach .. 16 stories up.. real shimmy thru the building, lasted 15-20 seconds.”
The quake was the largest off of Florida since a 4.0 magnitude quake struck off the Atlantic coast in February 2024.
