Cape Coral couple feels tremors from Cuba earthquake

Keith and Tracy Vautherot, residents of Cape Coral, felt tremors from a 6.1-magnitude earthquake near Cuba around 2 p.m. Monday, with Keith estimating the shaking lasted 6 to 10 seconds while Tracy believed it was longer.

Keith described the moment, saying, “My wife is on the couch next to me, and all of a sudden, my chair started doing this number. And I’ve not experienced that before. And I look over at my wife, Tracy, and she goes, ‘We’re having an earthquake.’ So right away I looked on my phone, and we couldn’t see anything of anything going on anywhere. Then all of a sudden I saw Cuba had a 6.1.”

The couple, familiar with hurricane preparedness, admitted they were uncertain about what to expect from an earthquake.

“The first thing that ran into my mind, however, was, you know, 6.1. I don’t know if that would form a tsunami for the Gulf Coast or not, but since nobody knew about it and it was minor, we weren’t overly perturbed or upset about it,” Keith said.

While Keith believed the shaking lasted only seconds, Tracy felt it was longer, reflecting her prior experience with earthquakes.
