A suspect who tried to rob a Miami Gardens home was shot and killed by a neighbor early Tuesday, police said.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. in the area of Northwest 36th Avenue and 174th Street.
Miami Gardens Police said the suspect tried to rob a house and the victim had opened his door to the suspect before they got into a physical altercation.
The resident’s girlfriend ran to a neighbor’s house for help and at some point, the suspect fired a gun, police said.
The neighbor responded and shot the suspect in the head. He was taken to Aventura Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Multiple officers were at the scene throughout the morning Tuesday as the investigation was underway.
Neighbors said they were shocked to learn of what had happened.
“It was crazy. I’m on my way to work at 6 o’clock in the morning. I’ve never seen nothing like this at this time of the day where I live,” one man said. “Over here in this area, it’s not normal.”
Police haven’t released the identities of anyone involved in the incident. The neighbor who opened fire is cooperating with the investigation, officials said.
