Miami, FL – Miami-Dade County officials have taken action to secure a critical piece of infrastructure that supports operations at one of the nation’s busiest cruise and cargo ports.
County leaders voted to move forward with eminent domain proceedings involving a fuel storage property located on Fisher Island that serves PortMiami.
The decision follows a lengthy dispute over ownership and future control of the site, which county officials say is essential to maintaining fuel access for ships operating through the port.
The facility stores fuel that is transported by barge to vessels arriving at and departing from PortMiami.
According to county officials, continued access to the property is necessary to support cruise operations, cargo activity, and other maritime services that contribute significantly to the local economy.
The property was purchased by a private development group in a deal valued at approximately $180 million.
Following the acquisition, negotiations between the county and the property’s owners failed to produce an agreement regarding long term access and potential purchase terms.
County officials argued that the cost being sought for the site exceeded its assessed value and was not in the public’s interest.
Under Florida law, eminent domain allows government entities to acquire private property for public use while providing compensation to the owner.
County leaders said the action is intended to preserve critical infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted fuel service for PortMiami operations.
