MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A 5-year-old girl died Wednesday after she was shot inside a Florida City home, authorities said.
Florida City police were called around 1:55 a.m. to a home in the 1400 block of Northwest 1st Court after a shooting was reported. Officers found the child with a gunshot wound to her torso, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
A Florida City officer took the girl and her mother to Homestead Hospital. The child was later airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where she died.
Family members identified the child as Genova Parks. Her grandmother described her as bright and full of life, and said the shooting should never have happened inside a home.
Investigators said five people were inside the residence when the shooting occurred: Genova, her 4-year-old brother, her mother and two adult men.
