JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — A rediscovered cemetery in Jacksonville is being explored to identify the names and potential burial sites of those laid to rest there.

The cemetery, which contains a mix of marked and unmarked headstones, was found in a wooded area where an old church was located near Bell Fork Road.

Some of the headstones are known to belong to veterans and families, and there are potentially more headstones buried beneath the ground waiting to be discovered.

“I knew there was a cemetery here because in 1965 my brother passed, and he’s buried out here,” said Deborah Georges. “And in 1967 my uncle passed, and he was buried out here. In 1974, my grandfather was buried out here. I knew there was a cemetery here.”

They’re looking for volunteers to help identify more graves.
