Friday marks exactly 10 years since the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, one of the deadliest massacres in U.S. history.

It was June 12, 2016, when a gunman entered the gay club and began a shooting spree that claimed the lives of 49 people and left over 50 others wounded.

The gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, was killed in a shootout by law enforcement after a three-hour-long siege in which he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

The nightclub was demolished this past March and the city of Orlando plans to build a memorial at the site to commemorate the people killed in the mass shooting.

An annual remembrance ceremony for the victims will take place Friday afternoon.
