FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A suspect who barricaded himself inside a Fort Lauderdale business Friday afternoon was taken into custody after a SWAT response that lasted several hours, police said.
According to Fort Lauderdale police, officers were called at approximately 2:42 p.m. to a business near Northwest Ninth Street and Northwest 10th Terrace after receiving a report of a man who entered a restricted area and began “acting erratically.”
Patrol officers, a K-9 unit and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate the man. Investigators later determined he was still inside the business and alone.
Police said the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was not authorized to be inside the building.
Fort Lauderdale Police Department SWAT officers and crisis negotiators responded to the scene and attempted to communicate with the man.
Shortly afterward, police announced that the individual “surrendered peacefully” and was taken into custody.
Police have not released any information about why the man barricaded himself inside the business, and no charges have been announced.
