TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – More than 100 cases of water were collected Saturday for the FAMU Marching 100 to keep students hydrated amid the summer heat.
Director of Bands Shelby Chipman said it’s important for the group.
“These students come here from around the country,” Chipman said.
The event is part of the Marching 100’s annual water bottle donation drive to make sure high school students attending band camp this summer are safe.
“We know they’re going to have a good time, but we want to make sure that they stay hydrated,” Chipman said. “We have a formula for making sure that we rehearse for a minute, but then we also hydrate for a minute.”

Several people drove through the Strikers Studio parking lot Saturday to drop off cases of water, and Chipman said every case counts. “We’ve been very grateful,” he said.
In addition to learning the skills of musicianship, Chipman said they work with students on the importance of character and academics.
“We encourage them during our different sessions to get good grades at their respective schools so that they’ll qualify to Florida A&M University,” he said.
The next water bottle drive is on June 27 at Earley’s Kitchen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
You can also drop off cases of water bottles to FAMU’s music department Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
