PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Body camera footage was released showing the arrest of a man accused of opening fire on another vehicle during a road rage incident in Port St. Lucie.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) said the suspect, Ali Sami Zaiter, 39, of Port St. Lucie, was taken into custody on Wednesday following an investigation.
PSLPD Chief Leo Niemczyk held a news conference on Thursday regarding the shooting arrest.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, May 25 around 7:30 p.m. near Southeast Crosstown Parkway and Southeast Sandia Drive. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and spoke with two victims — a male driver and a female passenger — who said another driver in a pickup truck had fired multiple shots at them with an AR-style rifle while they were in their Honda Accord. Although the victims’ car sustained two bullet holes, they were not injured.
The Police Chief says the two people in the Honda encountered Zaiter driving the pickup truck on U.S. 1.
They turned from U.S. 1 onto the Crosstown Parkway in Port St. Lucie, and police say Zaiter and the two people in the Honda started street racing.
“They were traveling beside each other. The passenger in the victim’s car gave a thumbs-down motion toward the suspect. That seemed to enrage the suspect and things got ugly at that point. On Crosstown Parkway the suspect pointed what they described as an AR-style rifle and fired one shot, which hit the rear door on the driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle,” Chief Niemczyk explained.
The Police Chief says Zaiter fired a second shot at the people in the Honda after they pulled onto a side street.
“The trajectory went right over her head and out the windshield. Extremely lucky. That passenger side victim could’ve easily been hit in the head. If she were my height she probably wouldn’t be alive right now,” Chief Niemczyk said.
Photos provided by the police department show the damage the Honda sustained.
Through investigative efforts, PSLPD identified Zaiter’s Ford F-150 pickup truck as the suspect vehicle. Detectives determined Zaiter was the sole occupant, driver, and shooter during the incident. The truck was later located at Zaiter’s place of employment, Amethyst Recovery Center, and was towed as evidence, according to PSLPD.

On Thursday, around 4:30 p.m., PSLPD SWAT officers arrested Zaiter at his residence on SW Bridgeport Drive. He now faces multiple charges, including:
Discharging a firearm in a public spaceShooting into an occupied vehicleAttempted felony murderTampering with evidence
The newly released body camera footage shows the moment officers approached and detained Zaiter at his home on SW Bridgeport Drive.
“The roadways need to be a place where our residents can travel safely. You have an expectation that you should be able to drive to work without being shot at, right?” said Chief Niemczyk.
He says people need to be very careful while driving, use patience, and avoid getting into a confrontation with another driver.
“You never know how a confrontation is gonna play out, right? You might be confronting the wrong person at the wrong time or the wrong day, then if you lose your life over what? It doesn’t make any sense,” Niemczyk said.
We went to Zaiter’s home seeking comment. The front door is boarded up, and no one responded when we knocked. Zaiter is being held without bond.
Police are continuing to gather evidence and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to contact PSLPD at (772) 871-5001 or Treasure Coast CrimeStoppers at (800) 273-8477.
